In this heartfelt moment, Duckhill Kennel’s Founder Robert Milner can be seen playing fetch with Buccleuch Temperance, a vivid reminder of the passion, bond, and joy that defined his life’s work at Duckhill Kennels. Watching him throw the bumper and see how she eagerly retrieves it captures the essence of what he stood for — nurturing dogs not only for skill, but for connection, enthusiasm, and mutual trust. This clip is more than just a training exercise; it’s a celebration of Robert’s legacy and love for these dogs. At Duckhill Kennels, we carry forward his spirit of devotion, excellence, and genuine companionship in everything we do.
Robert Milner was deeply committed to passing on his knowledge, experience, and philosophy to the next generation of trainers. Through hands-on instruction and clear, positive methods, he shared not only the techniques of effective retriever training but also the values of patience, teamwork, and respect for the dog. His teaching emphasized clear communication, calm leadership, and a deep understanding of canine behavior, principles that continue to shape the training approach at Duckhill Kennels today. This photo captures Robert working closely with his training team, exemplifying his lifelong dedication to education and the advancement of positive, proven training methods.
This video beautifully captures Robert Milner’s calm and intentional approach to training as he works with Buccleuch Temperance on steadiness. His quiet leadership and clear communication highlight the foundation he built at Duckhill Kennels—one rooted in trust, patience, and teamwork between handler and dog. Moments like these reflect not only his skill as a trainer, but his deep understanding of the Labrador’s working spirit. We are proud to uphold his methods and values as we continue the work he began.
Robert Milner’s love for British Labrador Retrievers was more than just a breeder’s interest — it was a lifelong mission. In the early 1980s, he traveled to England “in search of examples of original Labradors,” intent on preserving the temperament, structure, and working ability that characterized classic British lines. He is credited with importing the first British Labs to Wildrose Kennels in 1983, and building Duckhill Kennels around those principles.
Milner worked with Canoe Labradors, a variation or line within his kennel, as part of his overall commitment to excellence in retriever work. At Duckhill, he and his team strove to blend the best of pedigree, temperament, and working ability to produce dogs that are not only exceptional in the field, but also cooperative companions.
This photograph reflects that legacy — Milner, holding a young pup, showcases not only the pride he had in these dogs, but also his role as guardian of a bloodline and training culture. His passion and vision continue to resonate through every dog, handler, and trainer inspired by his work.
